Detective Nakamura called in for backup, and when the Cessna was just a speck on the horizon, sirens filled the air. An ambulance rushed in with its lights flashing. Two police cars followed. Divine and Nakamura left the scene to the backup team, then did the honor of escorting Allan to the station themselves.

Nakamura drove them north off Duck Key, then accelerated southwest on US-1. They were all silent until they reached Vaca Key and Allan leaned forward.

“Could you pull over?” he said. He sighed and added, “I need to say something. Before the circus starts.”

Nakamura looked to Divine. He nodded and gestured right to an exit up ahead. Nakamura slowed and eased onto Dorsett Drive. Turned onto the grass and dirt between a cluster of palm trees. Left the engine idling and the AC blasting.

The vehicle was quiet. Divine and Nakamura shifted in their seats to get a good look at Allan.

He sat there in silence, staring at the floor, then looked up and said, “I want to die, Ray.”

“You told Logan and Ange it was self-defense,” Divine said. “If that’s true, justice will be served and you’ll be released.”

“I don’t care. I have nothing to live for. I want to die. But I need to know something before I go. I need to know what was said to Roxanne.”

Divine squinted at his old friend. “What do you mean?”

“She drove over here and went ballistic because someone said something to her. It pushed her over the edge. Led her to believe that not only had I failed at preventing our son’s death, but that I am the killer.” He paused a beat, shaking his head in shock. “Where in the hell could she have gotten that idea?”

The detectives exchanged glances. Nakamura was about to say something, but Divine cleared his throat and beat her to it.

“I don’t know, Allan,” he said.

“Promise me you’ll find out who said something to her,” Allan said. “Promise me, Ray.”

Divine nodded. “I promise. I’ll get to the bottom of this. And we can talk more when we get to the station.” He shot Nakamura a look, then she pulled back onto US-1, heading toward Marathon.
